Straight Needles

Begin by covering your work surface to protect it from markers and lacquer. Working outside is best, if possible. Wear old clothes, too, in case of marker accidents. Assemble all your tools and materials.

Form Points and Cut

Sharpen the end of a dowel in the pencil sharpener before cutting the needle to length, in case you need to redo the point. One person should support the end of the long dowel while the other sharpens the point. Be careful to hold the dowel straight (not at an angle) so the needle’s point will be centered. When you are happy with the needle point, place the dowel flat on your work surface. Measure 10" (25.5 cm) from the point of the needle and mark a cutting line with your pencil. Using the penknife or craft knife, score a line around the dowel. Snap the dowel off at the score. Make a second needle to match.
